Media outlets from across the country are tapping into Nick Hillman’s expertise to help them put the topic of federal student loan programs in perspective.
Hillman is a professor with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis and is an expert in how finance, policy, and geography shape educational opportunities. He is also the director of the university’s Student Success Through Applied Research (SSTAR) Lab.
In an interview with St. Louis Public Radio, Hillman discusses racial inequities in the student loan system.
“People of color, Black men and Black women in particular, have consistently been disenfranchised by the lending system, not only needing to borrow more money to go to college, but then in the labor force, [they] don’t have the same kind of return on that investment, even for the same degrees, and therefore don’t have the capacity to repay their loans,” he states.

In addition, Hillman has been interviewed recently for stories from Yahoo News, KXMC, and KGNU about the federal student loan forgiveness program, and by SciLine, where he discusses “which borrowers struggle most to repay their loans and are likeliest to default; how student loans affect individual borrowers and their families; and what impacts would be expected from the implementation of the Biden administration’s plan or resumed student loan repayments.”
