The modifications made to Pakistan’s domestic cricket circuit, in the opinion of wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, have reduced the depth of the country’s talent pool.
He believes the decision to exclude departmental teams and regional cricket has had a significant negative impact on their bench depth.

Akmal asserted that given their depth, India, their main adversary, may field two or three teams. He believes that the paucity of options makes it difficult for Pakistan to put together even one competent team.
Based on the wicketkeeper-batter, not many players possess the experience and mental fortitude necessary to compete at the international level.

Kamran Akmal said in an interview with Paktv.tv: “Regarding the question of whether Pakistan can also have two teams (First at least make one team properly). The number of teams playing domestic and regional cricket before 2018–19 allowed for the creation of three teams”
As a result of their outdated domestic setup, Kamran Akmal claimed Pakistan has historically attracted a number of elite players. He thinks that the potential that was previously available for the national squad was greatly influenced by departmental cricket.
“Departmental teams have produced many outstanding players in Pakistan, but we have ceased doing so and now have only six domestic teams. If this experiment had been successful, Fawad Alam would not have had to wait 11 years to return. We are finding it difficult to form one proper team.”
It will be intriguing to see whether the PCB, led by Najam Sethi, can replicate the success departmental cricket enjoyed in Pakistan.
