A Suffolk cricket captain has described how his club has been left in a “difficult situation” after insurers refused to pay out to repair damage caused by “catastrophic” flooding from a burst water pipe that has left the club’s pavilion completely unusable.
William Foskett, skipper at Easton Cricket Club, said the insurers’ response was a “kick in the teeth” after they deemed the water should have been turned off while not in use during the winter months.
The club has now had to set up a Crowdfunding appeal to try and raise between £17,000 and £27,000 for the repairs after the water caused a ceiling to collapse, damaged the electrics and paint work and tore down plaster around the premises in School Lane, Easton.

Mr Foskett said paying for the work from the club’s savings would leave no money for any other expenses, such as groundwork.
He added: “It is a difficult situation and it was very unexpected as we had thought the insurance was going to cover it and it was a bit of a kick in the teeth to find out that they were not going to pay it, so now we have got to scratch around for £20,000.
“It is just annoying and unexpected. If we had known a month ago that the insurers were not going to pay out then we would have been able to start the Crowdfunding campaign sooner.”

The online funding appeal will be running for another month and the club hope to have carried out the repairs in time for the start of the new season in April.
Easton currently has three men’s teams in the Two Counties Cricket Championship, as well as a ladies’ team, Sunday team and four junior teams.
The appeal has so far raised £2,210 and donations can be made at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/easton-cc-clubhouse
