Cricket ACT Chief Executive Officer, Olivia Thornton, has offered a warm welcome to Canberra to all players, teams, match officials, umpires, scorers and supporters who are on Ngunnawal Country for the Toyota Australian Country Cricket Championships, beginning today and running through to next Friday, 20 January.
“2022–2023 marks the sixth Championship event, and it’s fantastic that we can once again see this competition played after a hiatus due to the global COVID-19 pandemic,” Thornton said.
“The Nation’s Capital welcomes visitors with open arms and warm hearts. We have so many wonderful tourist attractions in Canberra, and we hope those visiting us on Ngunnawal Country have time to do some sightseeing while in town for the cricket.
“Hosting the Toyota ACCC is also a great honour for Cricket ACT.
“Events like these provide an opportunity for our best country players to compete and share their skills on the national stage, testing themselves against interstate and international opposition.”
Some of the very best players from regional and rural Australia will be in action on fields across the ACT and the surrounding region.
Fourteen teams will gather in Canberra for both the men’s and women’s competitions, with Cricket ACT offering a very special welcome to the Philippines’ men’s side, and the Papua New Guinea women’s side, who will add their own flair to the tournament.
“I’d like to wish all players and officials the very best of luck over the coming week and hope you enjoy, and savour your experience,” Thornton added.
“A note of thanks to our volunteers, many of whom will again be assisting over the next week. You are the lifeblood of our sport; we see you and we appreciate you.
“I’d also like to extend sincere thanks to Cricket ACT, Cricket Australia and the Country Delegates who’ve worked hard to ensure this is a successful and memorable Championships for players, coaches, officials, and supporters.”
Cricket ACT extends its congratulations and best wishes to every team contesting the Championships.
We hope you enjoy your time in the Nation’s Capital and thank you for your contribution to Australian Cricket.
