Members of the Mashpee Finance Committee asked few questions during its review last week of the Fiscal Year 2024 department budget requests, inquiring only about the veteran’s services budget.
The board also discussed funding a grant coordinator position and increasing lifeguard salaries and election-related spending.
Chairman Jeffrey C. Pettengill said the review of the working document was to make sure finance committee members were comfortable with the budget numbers moving forward before a final recommendation and vote.
Town Manager Rodney C. Collins will be presenting his final budget recommendation during the Mashpee Select Board meeting on Monday, January 23, and to the finance committee on February 9.
During the meeting last Thursday, January 12, member A. Gregory McKelvey asked for clarification on a line item from Veteran Services requesting more information on what services are provided to veterans in town.
The line item in question was $50,000 toward membership. Emphasizing his support for the funding allocation, Mr. McKelvey said he wanted clarification on what is offered to veterans through the membership and to make sure the town is providing this information to veterans as well.
Mr. McKelvey and Mr. Pettengill also voiced their support for the funding of an additional part-time grant coordinator as a part of the select board’s budget. Increased funding throughout the pandemic has highlighted the need for a coordinator to work on grants directly, Mr. Pettengill said.
The town’s Accounting Department budget also increased to include a part-time hire to help the department oversee the workload associated with the town’s residential tax exemption.
Other areas of discussion during the review asked about the increases in lifeguard salaries to remain competitive with surrounding communities and an increase in election spending due to the additional mailouts and ballots required during the last voting cycle.
Also related to elections, committee member Lee Smith said the Town Clerk’s Office will request additional funding next year through Capital Improvement Projects to purchase new polling machines. Briefly touched on by Mr. McKelvey was the possibility of a change in venues for the town and state elections from one location to three.
