India Cricket Overhaul: BCCI Apex Council Meeting LIVE: There is a late twist in India T20 Reboot tale. Not the entire BCCI is convinced that Rohit Sharma should be removed as T20 captain immediately. With T20 World Cup 2024 still almost two years away, some in the BCCI wants to take a wait-and-see approach. Instead of taking an immediate decision with the selection committee on its way out, they want to delay the call. The new BCCI selection committee will instead take a call on whether Hardik Pandya should take over full-time India T20 captaincy. A discussion could take place today at the Apex council meeting. At the BCCI Apex Council meeting, which is underway virtually, BCCI President Roger Binny can bring it up. But there are chances that he won’t. The discussion on split coaching and captaincy is not officially on the agenda.
“It’s not on agenda. If the president wants to call it in, he will. We have time for T20 World Cup. All focus is now on next year’s world cup. Making a change even in one format could be demoralising,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

But there is a twist too. A call on Rohit Sharma’s T20 captaincy may have to wait until the World Cup 2023. A section of BCCI doesn’t want to hinder the current setup by changing a coach or the captain abruptly. Rather, Rohit could stay on as T20 captain till October 2023. Once the ODI World Cup is over, the BCCI and the selection committee can take a call considering Rohit would be 36.
“The current selection committee has no say in anything other than recommendation and team selection. Making a change in captaincy is a big call and without a fixed selection committee will be a big blunder. Not all are in favour of Rohit’s removal. He has only been the captain for a year,” another BCCI official close to the development told InsideSport.

Split captaincy: The BCCI is in dilemma at the moment. Virat Kohli was removed as ODI and Test captain as they did not want split captaincy. But with Rohit Sharma ageing and the need to set plans for the 2024 T20 WC have forced the board to rethink. Rohit Sharma will stay put as the ODI captain till 2023 World Cup. A discussion on ODI and Test captaincy will only take place after 2023 WC.
Split Captaincy: With more and more bilateral series, a need to look at alternatives is much-needed. BCCI could follow England’s footsteps in this regard. Although Dravid will stay on as the ODI coach, BCCI is mulling a decision to appoint a T20 coach. It’s not that Dravid hasn’t played T20s but like many others, he has been conservative in his approach.
