LIMPOPO – Limpopo Impala Cricket (LIC) held their provincial capping ceremony on December 9 at Sterpark Guesthouse in recognition and celebration of more than 50 players selected from various schools for the provincial team.
The ceremony saw learners being congratulated and honoured for their performances throughout the season.
Players in the u/16 and u/19 girls and boys teams were capped by LIC before they headed to represent Limpopo at the National Cricket South Africa Tournament.
Youth and schools’ sports co-ordinator Katlego Sempe said players were selected from a high-performance squad system.
“We have our coaches that focus on the high-performance squad and trial system which has other selectors to select the best players in the province.”
He added that the role of LIC is to be a custodian of the sport which means everything goes through them and is supported by the community and the Impala team.
“We want our players to know that this goes beyond just representing the province, but it is a representation of everything that we are and they should remember where they come from when they go further.”
LIC CEO Tommy Phiri wished all the players well for the tournaments.
“Go do your best, show your strength and don’t forget to enjoy every moment of the tournament, while your represent your province.”
On December 15–19, the u/19 boys travelled to Stellenbosch and on December 13–16, the u/19 girls travelled to Bloemfontein, while the u/16 boys travelled to Johannesburg on December 11–14 and the u/16 girls to East London on December 12–16.
