Warner had only managed four half centuries in his last 27 innings going into the second Test of the three-match series against South Africa and there were whispers of him being on shaky ground with respect to his spot in the Australian Test side.
Putting all the talk behind him, David Warner showed with a sensational double century that his career was far from over as the left-hander struck 16 boundaries and 2 sixes while going at a strike rate of 78.43.
The batter battled the scorching heat of Melbourne which led to dehydration and cramps and Warner had to retire hurt for 200 not out. His return at the crease did not last long as he was bowled by Anrich Nortje off the very first delivery.
Despite that, Warner registered his name in the history books, becoming only the second Australian after Ricky Ponting to score a double century in his 100th Test match.
Warner has now slammed 25 centuries in his Test career which is the fifth-highest among openers only behind Sunil Gavaskar, Alastair Cook, Matthew Hayden and Graeme Smith — a truly elite list to be part of.
The southpaw has two massive Test series lined up in the form of the Australia tour of India and the away Ashes, with a potential Word Test Championship final to go along with it, and will aim to finish on a high.
