Despite an early 3-51 collapse to start Australia's innings, a strong 117-run partnership between Steve Smith and Travis Head offered a much-needed reprisal.
With two late wickets on the verge of stumps, the Aussies will resume day two on 5-145.
Head leads the host's scorecard, unbeaten with a speedy 78 runs from 77 balls.
Australia trail by seven runs after South Africa set a score of 152 earlier in the day.

Pressure on David Warner is continuing to mount after a first-ball duck in the first Test against South Africa at the Gabba.
Warner faced the new ball against Proteas quick Kagiso Rabada, who sent a well-directed short ball towards Warner's ribs.
He succeeded only in fending the ball to Khaya Zondo, who took a brilliant catch at short leg.

After the breakthrough of Steve Smith, the South African's finish the first day with the fifth wicket of Scott Boland.
Unfortunately the night watchman departs in the final over of the session, triggering stumps.
Boland is caught behind after edging it to Proteas' keeper Kyle Verreynne. He manages one run from four balls.
Australia finish the first fay 5-145, they trail by seven runs.
"We have a game of cricket," Kerry O'Keefe said in commentary for Fox Cricket.
South Africa grab a late wicket with Anrich Nortje bowling Steve Smith.
The partnership was tracking along late but Smith tried to defend
Smith departs with 36 runs from 68 balls.
Scott Boland comes to the crease on the shadow of stumps to fulfill the role of the night watchman.
Australia are 4-144, they trail by seven runs.
What a brilliant partnership this has been between Travis Head and Steve Smith.
It's now beyond 100 off just over 100 balls.
Head has raced to 67 and Smith 34.
There's about a half-hour left in the day.
Travis Head has just bought up his 50 with a brilliant six flicked off his pads over square leg.
Aside from a couple of half chances, Head hasn't taken risks in this innings, yet he's still scored quickly. He bought that 50 up off just 48 balls.
Steve Smith down the other end is scoring quickly as well – he's 28 off 38.
Head just took 15 off that Ngidi over – as many as the Sydney Thunder scored against the Strikers last night.
Travis Head and Steve Smith are digging in at the Gabba. Coming together at 3-27, they've pushed the score up to 3-57 relatively comfortably.
Smith survived a chance earlier – he edged a great nut that bounced just in front of Dean Elgar at slip.
Smith is now starting to play with much more aggression – he just pulled Nortje aggressively through midwicket for four.
There are still about 20 overs left in the day.
