Businessman, cricket administrator and Manager of the National Stadium, Azad Ibrahim was on Thursday evening elected President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) for the next two years, replacing Neil Barry Sr., who did not seek re-election.
Ibrahim, a current Vice-President of the Guyana Cricket Board and President of the Muslim Youth Organisation, was unanimously elected to the post, as was the other members of the new executive.
“My aim is to continue the good work of the GCA,” Ibrahim, who is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and a member of the Prison Board, told News Room Sport on Friday.
“Our aim is to start the process of development at the grassroot, identifying talents and bringing them through the ranks. We also want to expand female cricket, and also provide facility to allow for better training so that we can produce cricketers of a high quality,” Ibrahim added.
Another critical area of focus for the new President is marketing and sponsorship, a key element in promoting and advancing the growth of the game.
Former West Indies player and Chief Selector Roger Harper is the First Vice-President, while businessman Safraz Sheriffudeen is the Second Vice-President.
Joshua Kissoon has been elected to the post of Secretary; Deborah McNichol- Assistant Secretary; Imran Ally- Treasurer; Lawrence Smith- Assistant Treasurer; Shaun Massiah- Competitions Committee Chairman; Jameel Baksh- Marketing Manager; and Shaquille Williams- Public Relations Officer.
Harry Parmesar is the Auditor.
Ibrahim welcomed the new executives- Sheriffudeen, Kissoon, Smith, Baksh and Williams- and urged them to work in the interest of building the game in the Georgetown area, with the aim of advancing the development of Guyana and West Indies cricket.
