Iftikhar Ahmed, a middle-order batsman who goes as “Chacha-e-Cricket” in Pakistani cricket circles, is now competing for Fortune Barishal in the Bangladesh Premier League.
Iftikhar is now the fourth leading run-scorer in this season of BPL with 273 runs in seven innings, at a staggering average of 91 along with an enormous strike rate of 177. He recently discussed how he came up with the nickname “Chacha-e-Cricket” during an interview with Cricbuzz.

Iftikhar Ahmed cited a game in Zimbabwe where he was bowling and Brendan Taylor was batting as the occasion for the nickname. Iftikhar narrates the story and stated:
“Look this is made by the people and like I said I don’t give much importance to what people say. There is a small story behind it and that happened in Zimbabwe when I was bowling and Taylor (Brendan) was batting and I was getting some spin. I asked Babar to remove the midwicket and get the square leg deep because if he wants to hit the ball through the midwicket there is spin and it can go to the square leg.

Babar said he would hit you for a six and I told him it’s just a delivery nothing much will happen and later he changed the fielders and in the following delivery when Taylor hit, it went straight to square leg and he was out.
Babar was happy and said you are Chacha-e-Cricket because you are so sharp and it was picked up by the stump mics and when I returned to my room, everyone was saying Chacha-e-Cricket, Chacha-e-Cricket, and I could not understand why this was happening and why people were saying this.
Iftikhar said that he doesn’t pay much attention to what others say, but he found the origin of the moniker amusing. He said that, in contrast to individuals who invest a lot of money to establish their brand, Allah bestowed this term on him without charge.
Later a friend of mine told me Babar’s voice was heard through the microphone but until that point I just couldn’t understand. What I say is that people spend Lakhs and Crores to develop a brand and Allah had given it( Chacha-e-Cricket) free of cost,” Iftikhar said.
