Donuts and everything else.
WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE
Wordtips compiled a list of popular food items from around the world and looked at how many times people have looked up their pronunciation. They looked up the popular dishes on Forvo, a publicly-sourced pronunciation library, to see which global dishes’ names had the most plays.
Key Takeaways
Chorizo — a type of cured pork meat — was the word people had the most trouble with, and its correct pronunciation was listened to over 22 million times online.
Among American dishes and drinks, people needed help with the pronunciation of “burger” — over 880,000 listens — and “bourbon” — over 60,000 listens — the most.
Items shared numerous local countries and across dialects that also stumped people often include: “hummus” (a chickpea based dip), “rioja” (a Spanish wine) and “rakija” (an alcoholic beverage from the Balkans).
