Dancers at the 2022 Facing Autism Inc.’s Prom boogie down on the dance floor last February.
Facing Autism Inc. is looking to boogie down at its second annual prom for individuals with special needs.
The prom, “A Night in Hollywood,” will be Saturday, March 4, at Best Western Starlite Village Inn & Suites, 1518 Third Ave. N.W. Dinner will start at 5:30 p.m., with the dance to follow from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and include dinner and the dance. Deadline to purchase tickets is Feb. 15.
Facing Autism Inc. is a local organization that works to raise autism awareness and acceptance for individuals on the autism spectrum through hosting events in the community for individuals with special needs and their families.
“We do a lot of events for the younger population, so our board was trying to put something together for the older special needs population in our area,” said board member Michelle Hammersland. “We decided it would be good because a lot of them, like my own son, didn’t go to their high school dances, so we thought it would be good to have one just uniquely designed for special needs individuals.”
Last year’s event, which was held at Iowa Central Community College’s East Campus in February, was a “huge success,” Hammersland said. “We outgrew our space that first year.”

The party gets started at the 2022 Facing Autism Inc. Prom last February. This year’s event will be March 4.
The prom is open to all individuals with special needs who are ages 16 or older, and is not limited to individuals with autism diagnoses. Last year, Hammersland said, one young man and his mom drove in from over near Omaha to attend the dance.
“Caregivers are encouraged to attend if they feel like their individual needs that support,” Hammersland said. “We just ask that they also purchase a ticket.”
Tickets will soon be available at Hy-Vee in Fort Dodge, but they can also be purchased online now at https://bit.ly/3Ci6HX6. Deadline to purchase tickets will be Feb. 15 and no tickets will be available at the door the night of the event, Hammersland said.
The dinner will be catered by the Starlite, with dessert from Larita’s Cakes ‘n More, and the dance will be DJ’d by Mojo Productions. Students from the Iowa Central photography program will be setting up a photo booth at the dance as well. Formal attire is welcome, but not required.
